Michter’s Barrel Strength Toasted Barrel Rye (2020)

Age: NAS

Release: Summer 2020

Color: Mahogany

👃: Molasses, pine tree, walnut, oak, dark cherries.•

👅: Standard rye/dark baking spice bomb on the mid palate, cinnamon altoids, salted caramel, grimes golden apple.

🏁: Dry and long, lingering finish. Black pepper, earl grey tea, oak.

Admittedly it took me a while to open this one, as I had such high expectations, limited supply and no idea when I might stumble onto another bottle in the future should Michter’s release more. But, after coming away with a backup from @depotliquors raffle event prior to the holidays, it was definitely time to open one of them.

Right off the bat I can understand why people go crazy for this one. It’s one of the most balanced whiskeys I’ve ever tried. Not too sweet, not too spicy, not too dry, not too anything. It’s the “baby bear porridge” of whiskey for me. It’s just right.

It smacks you right in the mid-palate with a perfect balance of sweet and spicy that just keeps on lingering. The finish is definitely on the dry side, but offers a complexity that is quite enjoyable as you go from one note to the next, and onto your next sip.

Highly worth the investment in time to try and track this one down at its retail cost of around $90.
